About Plitvice Lakes National Park

About Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Croatia, and one of the most spectacular natural landmarks in Europe. Renowned for its cascading lakes, powerful waterfalls, and lush forests, the park has been enchanting travelers for decades. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, it represents not only natural beauty but also ecological importance on a global scale.

Explore with us the history of the park, fascinating facts, and the extraordinary natural environment that makes Plitvice Lakes National Park a destination unlike any other. We’ll also show you what to do once you’re there, from hiking trails to guided tours.

Plitvice Lakes National Park Wildlife & Nature

What makes Plitvice Lakes National Park so special is its diverse natural environment. Covering almost 300 square kilometers, the park offers a mixture of lakes, rivers, waterfalls, dense forests, and meadows.

  • Lakes and Waterfalls: The park’s 16 lakes are divided into Upper and Lower Lakes. They flow into each other through a chain of spectacular waterfalls, changing color throughout the day from emerald green to turquoise blue.
  • Forests: More than two-thirds of the park is forested, dominated by beech, spruce, and fir. These forests create a fresh, oxygen-rich environment and shelter countless species.
  • Flora: Over 1,200 plant species grow in the park, including rare and endemic flowers. Orchids, mountain herbs, and colorful wildflowers brighten the trails in spring and summer.
  • Fauna: Wildlife is equally diverse. The park is home to 50 species of mammals, including deer, wild boar, and even elusive brown bears and wolves. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the 160+ bird species found here, from owls to eagles.

History of Plitvice Lakes National Park

The history of Plitvice Lakes National Park spans thousands of years, shaped by geology, water, and climate. Through tufa sedimentation, calcium carbonate deposits created natural barriers, forming the 16 lakes and 90 waterfalls we see today.

In 1949, Plitvice Lakes was declared Croatia’s first national park, underlining its national and European importance. UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site in 1979 for its unique geology and beauty. The park also witnessed modern history. In the early 1990s, it became the site of the “Plitvice Lakes Incident,” one of the first clashes of the Croatian War of Independence. Fully restored today, the park stands as a symbol of resilience and natural heritage.
